Meet GSO Co-Founders, Ampai and Stephanie. They have been leading GSO since it's founding in 2015. They are both deeply passionate about equity, inclusion, and #celebratingeverystudent.
The GSO is a non-profit organization that collects donated prom dresses and distributes them to students in financial need.
We collect prom attire donations year-round and hold semi-annual or annual giveaway events. At our events, students receive the Cinderella experience and can pick out one of over 500 prom dresses, 100% free of charge.
We currently have two branches, one downtown Halifax and another in New Glasgow led by our incredible and dedicated branch leader, Brandi Leigh.
After working through large financial struggles through childhood, I realized what really matters. No matter what, my community never stopped checking in and making sure my family and I were ok. This was when I learned the power of community. When grade 12 came around, I was thankfully in a place where my family could afford a prom dress. However, it quickly became clear that there were many other students who could not. I realized this was a gap that needed to be filled. Thus, the Glass Slipper was founded to fill that gap and provide a gift to other students in financial need, similar to the gift of support my community gave me.
Our Co-Founding Team left to right are as follows: Lynda Ofume, Ampai Thammachack, Anna Negulic, and Stephanie Manuel.
We are so thankful for all of the hard work our co-founding team members have done, which has made the GSO what it is today.
Our mission is to celebrate every student. Being a teen is difficult and comes with a variety of challenges. We want students to know that we see their strength, perseverance, accomplishments, and recognize their inherent worth. Our way of demonstrating this to students is by providing them a special gift from their community, in the form of a prom dress.
At our giveaway events, we aim to provide the Cinderella experience for all. We hope our events can be a special memory for students and the supportive individuals in their lives, including families, friends, mentors, teachers, guidance counsellors, and more.
In the near future, we will continue to build lasting relationships with amazing individuals in our community, including local businesses, organizations, and passionate student and community leaders. We are always keen to forge new partnerships; we know that this is what makes our community strong. Together, we will serve and celebrate students across our province.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make our events possible. This includes our donors who so generously donate their prom dresses every year, our phenomenal event volunteers and partners at the Halifax Central Library, and everyone who has taken time to amplify our message: celebrate every student.
